Objective: to ascertain the current level of awareness amongst researchers at higher education institutions and their use of research data management practices, and to justify priorities for further institutional support. Methods: a questionnaire survey of 150 academic and research staff from 25 departments at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (May–July 2026); descriptive statistics using analysis of means and frequency distributions; comparative analysis of the results obtained with European and Ukrainian data (EUA, Digital Science, DNTB). Results: the average self-assessment of knowledge regarding research data management is 2.72 out of 5 points. 66.7 per cent of researchers do not have a data management plan, 88 per cent name files manually, and 80.7 per cent store data on their personal laptops. The greatest difficulties relate to file organisation, copyright and licensing, storage, and defining access rules. Conclusions: the development of support should focus on practical tools, advice and the integration of data management into the research cycle.
